Liberal Democrats remain Party of REMAIN

A record number of Liberal Democrats, including 21 members from West Berkshire, attended their party's annual conference in Bournemouth last week.

They helped force debate on a motion to decide whether to call for an "EXIT from BREXIT" at all costs or let voters decide in "a first referendum on the facts", as new Leader Sir Vince Cable put it...

"In over 20 years of attending these conferences, I've never seen so many members packed into the hall," reports Local Liberal Democrat Chair Dr Tony Vickers. "It was an excellent debate, with many new members speaking passionately. The outcome was not long in doubt. A clear majority agreed with the policy on which we fought the recent election: to allow voters a chance to decide whether we proceed with leaving the EU once the nature of the deal our Government has negotiated is known. This standpoint makes it clear that we are still the Party of REMAIN".

"Far from letting the British people 'take back control', this Government is denying even our Parliament a say in the outcome," said Mr Vickers. "We say that a process begun by asking people 'What do you want?' must end by again asking them 'Is this what you voted for?' If it isn't, the people must be offered the chance to REMAIN in the EU and not just to crash out without any deal."

West Berkshire Liberal Democrat members spoke in at least two debates: one calling for Palestine to be given statehood alongside Israel; the other for business rates to be replaced with a tax on commercial land owners.
