Lib Dems: “49,000 Jobs in Berkshire Depend on Europe”

December 13, 2013 5:22 PM

Judith Bunting and Antony Hook with the Lib Dem teamProtecting Berkshire jobs is the top reason to for Britain to stay in the EU say local Liberal Democrats.

The call came as MEP Candidate Antony Hook spoke at Newbury and West Berks Liberal Democrats' AGM on Saturday.

Antony Hook, a 33-year old barrister who specialised in action against international crime before being selected as MEP candidate, cited research by LSE Professor Iain Begg who found that 3 million UK jobs are linked to our membership of the EU. The figure for the whole of Berkshire is 49,444.

Professor Begg estimates that 7,234 jobs in West Berkshire depend on our trading relationships within the EU.

Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the Lib Dems in West Berkshire, Judith Bunting said:
"We need to stay engaged in the EU and not put jobs at risk. These are jobs working in UK businesses that sell goods and services into the single market as well as for international firms that base their EU operations in the UK. They also cover projects, like medical and technological research, that are funded by EU grants.

"I know that to lose any of these jobs in Newbury, Hungerford, Compton, Thatcham and the rest of West Berks would be deeply damaging for local families."

Antony Hook said: "Next May's election will have a direct effect on jobs. I believe if we do well it will send a message locally and globally that the UK is staying engaged and that we are an open, free-minded community that looks to the future with confidence, it will attract investment and jobs to the UK.

"If UKIP and the Tories, who want to put our EU membership at risk, do well, people around the world will think the UK is pulling away and putting up barriers, which will repel investment and jobs.

"We want to make it as clear as we can. Liberal Democrats are the party of "in". If you think we should stay in Europe then Liberal Democrats are the party you should vote for next May."

In recent weeks, the CBI and big firms Nissan, Virgin, Siemens, Canary Wharf Group and Goldman Sachs have all said the UK must stay in Europe. Some have indicated they would take their business away from the UK if the UK left the EU.
