Lib Dems offer support to deliver Newbury's cinema1.45.40pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 3rd Jul 2007
West Berkshire Council's Liberal Democrat Group have this week offered to put their weight behind the push to get the Newbury cinema development back on track. In a letter to Council Leader Graham Jones, Councillor Jeff Brooks has put an offer of cross-party support on the line. Councillor Brooks explained the move: "Both council Groups are equally keen to see the cinema up and running in Newbury. We are therefore offering Councillor Jones our support and backing in order to make it absolutely clear to the developers that this is a priority for everyone, not just the ruling group. We have also asked him to let us know if there is anything we can do to help. I will be keenly awaiting his reply." The letter to Councillor Jones reads: "In light of recent attention regarding the provision of the cinema in Newbury and problems arising with developers I write to offer you the support of the Liberal Democrat Group. I am sure you are aware that we are equally keen to see this valuable development delivered, and would therefore be pleased to help if you feel a cross-party approach would help keep the issue high profile, and keep up the pressure on the developers. Our shadow portfolio holder for culture and leisure, Councillor Julian Swift-Hook, is currently away, so I would be grateful if you could direct your reply to me in his absence. He will be pleased to take part in any meetings or publicity you arrange in the future. I look forward to working together constructively to deliver this long-awaited project in co-operation."
