"Speed hump success for Thatcham North" - Lock12.00.00am GMT Thu 14th Dec 2006
Councillor Mollie Lock, who represents Thatcham North, has welcomed the news that the speed humps in Northfield Road, Park Lane and Park Avenue will be replaced with speed cushions. Councillor Lock commented: "I am delighted to hear that the speed humps in these three roads are being removed at the specific request of Thatcham North residents. It is rather disappointing that after making this her election promise to the people of Thatcham North, it has taken the Conservative ward member, and indeed the Tory administration, over 20 months to actually deliver - but I suppose delay and drift are what we have come to expect from them. Nevertheless, these humps have been hugely unpopular and I am pleased to support their removal." Shadow Transport and Highways portfolio holder, Councillor Keith Woodhams added: "I have been in talks with the council's Highways department over the last few weeks, endeavouring to get a contractor in to do the work as quickly as possible. I have been particularly concerned by the views of bus drivers and emergency services, who find them difficult to negotiate." Councillor Woodhams stated that he would prefer not to have traffic calming measures in place at all, but stressed the need to protect pedestrians and school children from speeding drivers. He welcomed the cushions as a deterrent to rat running in the area.
