Lib Dems call for patience with Lower Way closure

12.55.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 7th Sep 2006

Councillors Jeff Brooks and Keith Woodhams have called for patience and understanding as motorists begin to be diverted by the closure of Lower Way for four months starting from 11th September.

The closure is to enable work to be completed on a major upgrade by Thames Water to the drainage pipes servicing Thatcham.

Jeff Brooks asked people to be courteous and tolerant of the essential works:

"Keith, myself and all parties worked hard to ensure that the pipe could be routed through the old Waste Site and this in itself has virtually halved the amount of time that the road must be closed but we must now get used to the closure until after Christmas".

Councillor Keith Woodhams has assured people that he and Councillor Brooks will monitor the works regularly and are hopeful that they may be finished quicker than anticipated but warned that this will depend on many factors including weather.

He commented:

"We appreciate the flexibility that Thames Water has shown within this project and I hope they might accelerate the works to finish earlier than planned if at all possible".
