Lib Dem Plan Results in Cleaner Roundabouts

Environmental improvements to many roundabouts across West Berkshire have resulted after the Lib Dems got the Council to introduce a new scheme of sponsorship of roundabouts.

Many companies have now agreed to sponsor the landscaping of roundabouts in the district, including Vodafone, Sony, Bayer, Waitrose, Panasonic, Deanwood Park Golf Course, Penningtons Solicitors, Cannons Health Club, Fawcetts Honda & Volvo & B&B Development, whilst many others are now in negotiations.

Jeff Brooks, the Lib Dem group leader on the council, said, "I am delighted that the Lib Dems have created a great way to improve our environment and a great way for companies to promote themselves in an environmentally-friendly way. Working with local business the Lib Dem plan has generated funding to improve the roundabouts and the predicted surplus of around £40K per annum this will generate financial benefits that can be used to further enhance the local environment in the coming years."

Agreed deals are

1. Wairose A4 Floral Way Roundabout

2. Sony A4 Pipers Way A 'Japanese Garden' theme has become an extension of Sony's environmentally responsible approach on the A4 roundabout at the entrance to the company's Thatcham facility. This design builds on the company's excellent environmental reputation following Sony's receipt of the Business Commitment to the Environment Premier Award in 2002.

3. Penningtons A339/Bear Lane

4. Bayer Robin Hood Roundabout Newbury's Robin Hood roundabout, sponsored by Bayer, has benefited from the addition of new, raised lavender beds and shrubs in the central wild flower meadow area. The addition of white and yellow crocus to the additional new planting and shrubs that are joining the existing birch trees will also add structure and interest in the winter months.
