Fairer, Safer, Greener - Lib Dem Manifesto 2007
It is with immense pleasure that I introduce the Liberal Democrat Manifesto for the 2007 Local
Government elections in West Berkshire which will be held on 3rd May. This vision for our district
and our community is the result of a public consultation that we undertook from August 2006 as
well as a product of many hours of discussion with local councillors and campaigners, and the
feedback given to them as they have carried out their work in the community. We are grateful
for all of their contributions and believe this to be the people's manifesto - a statement of the
hopes and ambitions from residents throughout West Berkshire.
Our pledge is to make our community a fairer, safer and greener place to live for everybody.
A society where nobody is excluded and all enjoy an improved quality of local service from their
council. Our proposals directly relate to the key challenge of our age - the protection of our
environment. This is best illustrated by our commitment to provide free bus travel to people of
18 and under in our determination to encourage less car use and reduce the congestion on our
roads. Our waste strategy is joined up - providing local recycling centres to avoid long distance
trips to a central facility that remove the very benefits to be gained from recycling such waste.
We will do this within the constraints of tight financial management and a commitment to keep
council tax at or below the rate of inflation for the next four years.
Our candidates standing in these elections are drawn from across the spectrum of our community
- local and national business people, school governors, public sector workers, civil servants,
pensioners and experienced councillors, all of whom are determined to improve the quality of life
throughout West Berkshire. They all live within our community and will reflect your views and
will work tirelessly to represent them. They are a very talented group of people who I hope you
will find yourself able to support on 3rd May.
With your support we can recommence the good work we delivered for many years and build a
fairer, safer and greener council to ensure that West Berkshire is a fairer, safer and greener
community in which to live.
