Liberal Democrats in West Berkshire bucked the national trend to put in a strong performance in the local elections. The Lib Dems won 13 seats on the District Council, and even took one seat from the Conservatives, in Thatcham Central. Once again, Labour failed to win any seats on the Council, meaning that the Lib Dems are the only opposition to the Tories on the Council.
The Lib Dems did even better on Newbury and Thatcham Town Councils, maintaining control in both cases. In Thatcham, the party gained two more seats than they did in 2007, thereby doubling their majority to eight seats.
Party parliamentary spokesperson, David Rendel, said: "To have retained control of both Newbury and Thatcham Town councils is a marvellous result for the Liberal Democrats.
"At a time when the party was well down in the polls nationally, Newbury and Thatcham have bucked the national trend and delivered a severe rebuke to the Conservatives for only caring about the rural areas of West Berkshire."
