An end to the soaring numbers of West Berkshire Council staff added over the past three years could be in sight if Lib Dem calls for a freeze on the Council's headcount are passed at next week's full Council meeting.
Councillor Jeff Brooks, who is bringing the proposal to Council explained why it was so important to tackle the issue and regain control of staffing in the Council. "Staffing levels at West Berkshire Council have soared by a massive 12.7% since the Conservatives took control of the Council - in practical terms this works out at more than one new member of staff added every week. This rise is clearly unsustainable so I am proposing that the total headcount of Council staff is frozen - this means that key positions will still be filled if staff leave but that overall no new positions are created. This is a huge financial burden for the taxpayer to bear and it must end now."
