The Government has announced a £5.8 Million extra payment to West Berkshire Council for next year. This is even higher than the amount expected after last year's three-year settlement was announced. It should enable WBC to keep Council Tax down well below the average, while also providing much better than average services for local residents.
"Ever since 2005/6 West Berkshire Council has received much more grant than other Councils in comparison to our needs", explained the West Berkshire Liberal Democrats' Finance spokesperson, Councillor David Rendel.
"Next year we will do better than ever. If the Council is careful with its money, it should be possible to set a relatively low Council Tax to help hard-pressed residents in these difficult economic times.
"Of course this does assume that the Conservatives will not hoard away Council Tax in an election war chest, like they did last year, ready to bribe the taxpayers of West Berkshire with their own money before the next Council Election. We will be watching them very carefully for any signs of that, when they set the budget this year."
