Councillor David Rendel has forced the Conservatives at West Berkshire Council into an embarrassing climb-down over their reassurances that just 6% of West Berkshire households had suffered a missed collection during the botched roll out of the new waste contract.
Instead the Tories have admitted that the true figure is 50.3%, after Councillor Rendel repeatedly questioned Executive Member for Waste, Geoff Findlay, in an attempt to get him to come clean about the real number.
Councillor Rendel commented:
"After the huge numbers of complaints rolled in, it was obvious that 6% was nowhere near the true number of households whose waste collections were missed. Instead we find that over half the houses in the district have been missed at some point - several were missed twice and some were missed in every one of the first three cycles of the new scheme. The roll out was a farce from start to finish as Councillor Findlay's confession of the true failure rate finally proves.
"Having accepted full responsibility for previously announcing a figure which was nowhere near the truth, he has clearly misled the Council and the public and is at best incompetent and at worst guilty of a blatant untruth. In either event he should be considering his position and we are calling upon him to do so".
