A plan to manage heathland, wetland communities and ancient woodland as a single conservation area is to be considered by West Berkshire Council's Executive on 14th February. The land, located on Greenham and Crookham Commons, along the Kennet east of Thatcham and the intervening hillside, is considered to be of extremely high ecological value.
The plan has been welcomed by the Liberal Democrats. Dr Royce Longton, the Lib Dems' Environment Spokesman, said
"This area includes an incredible range of natural communities. It has been described by English Nature as 'A honeypot of habitats'. A conservation management plan was drawn up by the Council while we were in control, but was not implemented due to lack of funds. Now the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust wish to invest in the area, in partnership with the Council, as part of their Living Landscapes programme. We warmly welcome this proposal, which we see as bringing a long-term objective to fruition."
