Northcroft Councillors Tony Vickers, Ian Grose and Martha Vickers are concerned that the closure of Market Street will cause 'Cycling Chaos'
Northcroft's Councillor Tony Vickers has this week predicted that 'cycling chaos' will reign as Market Street road closures begin to allow works on the cinema to start.
Tony outlined his concerns for those being green and taking to their bikes during this period, especially residents of the West Fields area commuting within Newbury and Thatcham:
"For pedestrians, it will be fine. But cyclists shouldn't go to work via Market Place or Market Street. Despite my requests via our transport officers, Thames Water won't guarantee a separate cycle route through the cinema roadworks. Stick to the towpath, cross Northbrook Street, and bike on past Victoria Park under Parkway Bridge and the A339. Then you have the usual choice of Faraday Road/ A4 or towpath/Greenham Mill Bridge to reach the employment areas east of town.
"Coming home", he continued, "it will be OK, from the employment areas east of Sainsbury's, to use the toucan crossing and Kings Road West. From there you can either use Station Approach and the Council car park to reach Market Street - or dismount to pass the roadworks".
Councillor Vickers persuaded his West Berkshire Council colleagues at the Newbury Area Forum meeting this Tuesday (22nd) to approve up to £800 to be spent on new cycle route direction signs over and round the soon-to-be-completed New Monkey Bridge.
