Lib Dem Transport spokesman Councillor Keith Woodhams has welcomed the news, according to last week's 2025 Vision Conference, that buses may 'potentially' be taken out of Newbury's pedestrian areas as a victory for common sense.
"Obviously I am delighted that the Conservatives have finally accepted our arguments that the situation is dangerous and therefore completely unacceptable", he explained, "However it is a dreadful shame that it took them so many months of burying their heads in the sand before getting to this point. It is, at long last, a victory for common sense and public safety."
Town Centre ward member Roger Hunneman added:
"After more than 1000 signed a Lib Dem petition demanding action it is good to see that the Conservative administration is at last moving towards removing the buses. I would urge them to take action before March, not just think about it. There is still plenty of time for an accident to occur. Thinking about taking the buses out is not the same as actually getting on and doing it."
