Lib Dems are concerned about the lack of progress on Newbury's cinema project
Broken promises topped the agenda at a heated meeting of the Council's Executive meeting last night (Thursday). Lib Dem Councillors were keen to know when the next meeting with cinema developers Alanis would be held so they could attend.
Newbury Vision Shadow spokesman Roger Hunneman explained:
"I am surprised that Graham Jones has reneged on the offer made to me at the special council meeting of 10th September. Emma Webster made an offer that I could attend the Cinema meetings with Alanis which I accepted as I am keen to help the process to get a cinema in Newbury. I am very disappointed that Councillor Jones has gone back on this offer.
"The Cinema does not seem to be making any progress at all - people in Newbury are continually asking us when it is going to happen. We cannot tell them as so little information is forthcoming - there have been continuous delays to this project and people are becoming impatient."
The continuing lack of progress on delivering a cinema for Newbury has been heavily criticised by the Liberal Democrats. At the special meeting of full council in early September, assurances were made that the project was under way.
"Eight weeks ago the Conservative administration was positive that they were on the verge of delivering this cinema for Newbury. They continue to hold meetings in secret and provide no information or assurance to the public that this project will be delivered," outlined Lib Dem Leader Jeff Brooks, "Since then there have been no signs of work starting, or even an update from the administration on their progress. We made it very clear that we were prepared to offer our support on this important issue in order to move forward and bring a cinema to Newbury but this has been rejected by the Conservatives".
