Shoppers want to be able to fully enjoy pedestrianised Newbury
Shadow Transport spokesman Councillor Keith Woodhams last night presented full council with a petition of over 1,000 signatures calling for buses to be removed from Northbrook Street and other pedestrianised areas of Newbury.
In his speech to council, Councillor Woodhams explained why the petition had attracted so much support:
"The petition has been signed by a wide range of age groups including those with disabilities and noticeably visitors from outside the district. The petition seeks the removal of buses from the so called pedestrian areas in Newbury to make it safe for shoppers to move freely and without the serious risk of being knocked down by a bus.
It has also been proven that in other towns such as Reading, Basingstoke, Swindon and Windsor where there is full pedestrianisation in the main shopping areas, it brings in even more shoppers, and of course this is a massive boost to the economy and gives increased stability to the retailers of the town".
Deputy Lib Dem Leader Roger Hunneman added:
"We hope they will treat this with urgency rather than letting it drift as is characteristic of this council. As a Town Centre Task Group member I will be taking a personal interest in the progress of the petition."
The petition will now be referred urgently to the council's Town Centre Task Group. Additionally, the Lib Dem Group tabled a motion calling for the buses to be removed for the safety of the public, which was also referred to the task group and will return to council at a future date for resolution.
