Lib Dems are demanding a special council meeting to protect the cinema plans
West Berkshire Council's Liberal Democrats have today pushed forward the campaign to save Newbury's cinema after the shock announcement that the Council's leading Conservatives were prepared to pull the plug.
In a letter to the Chairman of Council asking for a special meeting of full council, Lib Dem members emphasised the need to maintain pressure on the developer and operator to deliver the cinema as planned on the Market Street site in order to avoid costly delays and setbacks.
Deputy Leader Councillor Roger Hunneman commented:
"This urgent meeting will be crucial to moving the project forward and making it clear to the developers that the whole council is fully behind the cinema development and remains committed to the completion of this project."
Lib Dem Finance spokesperson David Rendel added:
"We are constantly asked by members of the public 'when are we getting our cinema?'. It would be a disaster if the public are denied a cinema by further delays."
Culture and Leisure spokesperson Julian Swift-Hook concluded:
"Over four years ago I presented a petition to the Council signed by 10,000 local people who were crying out for a cinema for Newbury, and support has only increased since then. This special council meeting will be crucial in helping to identify the best way for the council to move this long-overdue project forward."
At the time of going to press the date of the Extraordinary Council meeting had yet to be confirmed.
