Lib Dems want buses taken out of Northbrook Street
West Berkshire Council's Liberal Democrat Group is demanding action is taken before someone gets hurt in pedestrianised Northbrook Street. In a motion tabled to the September meeting of full council, the Liberal Democrat Group will pin their colours to the mast, asking that buses are removed from Northbrook Street, Mansion House Street and the Market Place.
"Liberal Democrats have long been concerned that someone will end up hurt", explained Shadow Transport Spokesperson Keith Woodhams, "It was a manifesto promise of ours to take the buses out of Northbrook Street and even though we are not in control we will be keeping up pressure until a safe solution is put in place. For the Liberal Democrats this will be nothing less than removing the buses from these busy pedestrianised areas, and this is what we are asking the council to resolve to do in September."
Ward Member for the town centre, Councillor Roger Hunneman echoed the sentiment.
"Pedestrians have grown used to the new look town centre. Unfortunately as even our own MP admits, it's simply not safe combining buses and pedestrians. Bus drivers have resigned amidst fears of an accident and it is the views of people closest to the issue that we will be asking the Tories to take into consideration."
