Tories have refused to accommodate the large number of people likely to want to hear the Pinchington Lane application on Thursday
West Berkshire Council's Conservative administration have this week rejected a request submitted by Greenham councillor Julian Swift-Hook to hold the upcoming Pinchington Lane full council meeting in a suitably-sized venue.
Councillor Swift-Hook commented:
"Given the strength of public feeling about this controversial application to build houses on the Pinchington Lane site, a venue larger than the Market Street Council Chamber is appropriate. At the two previous meetings which heard the Abbotswood and Pinchington Lane applications, hundreds of people packed out Luker Hall. This is obviously an issue which people wish to engage with and the Tories' decision to hold the meeting in the chamber is regrettable as it will leave interested members of the public standing in the foyer."
Councillor Swift-Hook wrote to the Conservative administration reminding them of the reasons for holding the meeting in a larger venue. This request was turned down last week.
"I am surprised that the Conservatives hadn't considered a bigger venue before I wrote to them, but I am hopeful that they will at least arrange for the meeting to be relayed , so that those members of the public they exclude from the Chamber can at least hear the proceedings in the foyer. It has been clear from the outset that their concern for public feeling has been negligible, and despite fresh faces being elected in May, they remain at heart as lazy as before."
