Lib Dems collected 200 signatures on a petition to get the buses out of Northbrook Street
Local Lib Dems spent two hours running a stall in Newbury's Market Place this Saturday (21st April) during which time they got 180 signatures on a petition demanding the buses are taken out of Northbrook Street.
Clay Hill candidate Phil Barnett summed up the response on the streets:
"It was good to see the market so busy, but concern remains high about the safety of running the buses through Northbrook Street. During the time we were there we saw a 5-year-old boy narrowly avoid being hit by a bus. His grandfather said to us 'I think it's totally wrong that buses run through the market place, it's a real danger'. The problem was also made worse as live music was drowning out the sounds of the buses."
Liberal Democrat Leader Jeff Brooks added:
"Lib Dems have been calling for the buses to be removed from Northbrook Street for months now, and we will keep up the pressure until something is done. There can be no half measures while safety is at stake - how many near misses do there need to be? Even the Conservative MP agrees that buses in Northbrook Street pose a danger to pedestrians - why can't his colleagues at West Berkshire Council see this too? "

See Richard Benyon MP's Westminster Diary at http://www.wbca.org.uk/page/3/233/ which says "I was nearly run over by a bus in Northbrook Street on Friday. Buses do not rev these days, they purr and this one crept up on me with the speed and stealth of a cheetah."
