Chris Hood and Sam Elliott will stand for election in Speen
West Berkshire's Liberal Democrats are sticking to their promise to provide something for everyone and fielding two candidates aged 18 in Speen ward, appealing to the local youth vote. This is the first time people under the age of 21 have been allowed by law to stand in elections.
Speen candidate and Member of Youth Parliament Sam Elliott commented:
"I am delighted that the law has changed and will let us stand - after all, we're entitled to vote when we're 18, so it makes sense that we can be candidates in elections. West Berkshire Lib Dems offer something for everyone and I was particularly impressed by their 'Fairer, Safer, Greener' Manifesto including the free bus travel for 18s and unders."
Chris Hood, also aged 18 and standing in Speen ward, added:
"I was drawn to the Liberal Democrats by their forward-thinking policies, and particularly their focus on green issues. Young people have a great deal to offer at local government level - fresh ideas, modern outlooks - and I am pleased that the Lib Dems are recognising this.
