Tories have u-turned on their plans to increase school bus fares
Following the recent debacle over school bus fares, Councillor Sally Hannon, Shadow spokesperson for Children & Young People, has welcomed the Tories' decision not to implement massive fare hikes as a 'victory for common sense'. The proposals would have seen bus fares for Park House and Trinity School pupils increase from £4 to £7 in a matter of weeks.
Councillor Hannon said:
"Following the announcement that school bus fares would be increasing, concerned parents naturally complained, wondering if they would be able to afford to get their children to school. I was particularly concerned for those families supporting home-school travel for more than one child. I am naturally pleased that the Tory administration eventually decided not to go ahead with their plans, however I am concerned that they have only delayed this price hike pending a review. The risk that fares could go up remains."
Councillor Hannon continued:
"It seems to me that the Tory administration took their eye off the ball with this one - hence all the hasty backtracking. This smacks of laziness - I would have thought that nearly two years on they would be able to keep up to date with their portfolios!"
