Councillor Barnett is calling for better waste management in West Berkshire
Councillor Phil Barnett, who represents Clay Hill ward, has today criticised West Berkshire Council for failing to provide adequate waste collections over the Christmas period.
Speaking after witnessing piles of rubbish growing in the streets before Christmas, and continuing between Boxing Day and New Year, Councillor Barnett lamented the ability of the Conservative administration to effectively manage West Berkshire's waste collections:
"Piles of rubbish were visible in Newbury streets even before the festive period began. There is no rocket science needed to work out that Christmas inevitably brings higher levels of waste: rubbish, packaging, food waste. It comes once a year and brings with it bank holidays. Why is it beyond the Conservative administration to take a look at the calendar in advance, and organise adequate collections to stop waste piling up in our streets?"
Councillor Barnett was supported by Lib Dem Shadow portfolio holder for waste, Councillor John Farrin, who commented:
"This is not the first time the West Berkshire Tories have played a poor hand over waste. The current waste contract has been poorly managed by them, collections have been missed and waste piles allowed to spiral out of control at the Pinchington Lane site. Time for them to sort it out and give the citizens of West Berkshire the waste collection service they deserve; comprehensive, reliable and flexible. This is the service a Lib Dem administration would deliver if returned in May."
