Lib Dems want to keep planning decisions local
Councillor Sue Farrant has this week welcomed the passing of a motion challenging the undemocratic nature of the planning system. The motion highlighted aspects of the current system which allow government Planning Inspectors to overrule decisions made at a local level by elected representatives of the people.
Councillor Farrant commented:
"I am delighted that this motion received the support it deserves. This motion was a response to calls from members of the public at the Newbury Area Forum, and I am glad to be able to report back to them that West Berkshire Council will now be formally writing to the Local Government Association to ask them to lobby for change in the system. I have long been concerned that the Planning Inspectorate is able to overturn decisions made on local matters by the elected representatives of the local people. It is also unfair that applicants are able to appeal decisions but objectors are not. The system as it stands is unbalanced. This is a small step, but a small step in the right direction."
