Councillor Alexander Payton, who represents Thatcham Central ward on West Berkshire Council, has responded to the news that Tory-run West Berkshire Council has ruled out his proposals to make the first two hours of parking free at the Kingsland Centre, Thatcham.
Speaking after the decision to keep the current charges in place, Councillor Payton commented:
"Of course I am very disappointed that this proposal has been turned down. It would have been a very positive step in the right direction for Thatcham shoppers and retailers alike - as well as sending a message of support to them at a difficult time."
Councillor Owen Jeffery, who represents Thatcham South & Crookham, added:
"This response from the Tory administration is typical - they are only concerned with helping their own. While they are more than happy to waste £10,000 funding inappropriate planning applications, they refuse to put their own hands in their pockets to help local traders and businesses. A one day a week trial for 12 months seems reasonable and realistic to everyone except those in control. On top of this, they are not even prepared to provide the same free parking in Thatcham on Saturdays in the run up to Christmas, that they are providing in Newbury."
The West Berkshire Council Liberal Democrat Group has 'called-in' the decision on the Kingsland Centre free parking proposals, which will bring the matter to the Council's Overview & Scrutiny Commission. Councillor Jeff Brooks, who chairs the Overview & Scrutiny Commission, commented:
"Lib Dems are naturally trying to see that everything possible is being done for Thatcham during this difficult time. We are concerned that the consultation process was not broad enough - indeed, if it hadn't been for Lib Dem pressure the Tories would not have allowed enough time for Thatcham Town Council to comment on the proposals. There was considerable factual inaccuracy contained in the report provided, which may have been misleading. The scrutiny process will help reveal the most suitable option for Thatcham - then it is up to the Tories once again."
