Voluntary sector grants cuts will hit hard
Councillor Jeff Brooks has voiced his concerns about a recent cut to grants given to volunteer groups in West Berkshire. The Council's ruling Tory Executive voted through a host of amendments to the grants programme, including slashing the total value of grants available to volunteers in the district by half.
Councillor Brooks commented:
"The total value of grants available to Voluntary Sector Organisations has been dramatically cut by the Tories from £2,000 previously available to a maximum of just £1,000. I am concerned that this will have a negative impact on the ability of volunteer groups to carry on doing the sterling work they have carried out to date in West Berkshire. This seems to me typical of the petty cuts we keep seeing from the Tories and this cut in particular strikes the very heart of the community. How the Tories claim this terrible decision allows 'focused work', 'tackles problems' or helps volunteers to 'develop new initiatives' is quite frankly beyond me."
Note to Editor:
West Berkshire Council's Executive took this decision at its meeting on 30th November. Previously, grants of £2000 were available.
