Newbury will discuss the location of the market
Councillor Roger Hunneman, who represents Victoria ward on West Berkshire Council, has welcomed moves by Newbury Town Council to hold open discussions about the future of the market in Newbury town centre. The public open meeting, which will be held tonight at 7:30 in the Town Council Chamber, will entertain lively discussion between Councillors and members of the public about where the future of the market lies. It is hoped that market traders will also attend to help consider alternative solutions.
Councillor Hunneman commented:
"I am looking forward to hearing the views of market traders and members of the public, as the lack of consultation undertaken by the Tories at West Berkshire Council has meant their voices have largely gone unheard. Their high handed attitude seems to be very dismissive of local people whose livelihoods are intimately involved with these decisions, not to mention stamping all over Newbury Town Council's responsibility for the market. I am looking forward to a constructive debate."
In recent weeks it has been announced that the market will move back to the newly-refurbished Market Place ahead of schedule. It was originally going to remain in Northbrook Street until January.
