Lib Dem Councillors on West Berkshire Council have raised concerns about fire risk 'hot spots' in the district, including a local school, following a meeting of the Joint Consultative Panel (JCP) last week.
The JCP consists of council staff, councillors and members of trade unions and associations in West Berkshire and discusses employment and health and safety issues. It is also involved with promoting awareness of good working practice, meeting on a regular basis.
Councillor Phil Barnett, who sits on the JCP, commented:
"It was brought to the attention of the Panel that a fire door in a school had been removed, without being replaced. In another instance, significant holes were found in a fire door. The JCP have called for all these problems to be rectified within 7 days. It is amazing that such shortcomings in safety have been allowed to exist undetected for so long. It is crucial now that the situation is vastly improved before a serious incident takes place."
Councillor Barnett will also be taking up the impact of the Regulatory Reform Order [Fire Safety] Order 2005 at the next meeting of the Council's Executive on 19th October.
