Nearby roads and junctions are already dealing with high traffic volumes
West Berkshire Council Liberal Democrats today raised concerns over the proposed Newbury Racecourse development. The development would see 1700 new homes built including high rise flats. Planning applications are expected to be submitted in the autumn, following public consultation.
Jeff Brooks, Leader of the Lib Dem Group on the Council, commented:
"Unless plans include a very large investment in traffic management and provision of essential facilities including transport, health, social services, schools and recreation, then we will not support any application for homes on this scale in the area."
Councillor Brooks continued:
"The speed at which the application looks likely to progress is ringing alarm bells. Much more consideration needs to be given to the impact on the surrounding area. Everyone is aware that the nearby roads and junctions are already dealing with very high traffic volumes. The knock on effect through Newbury and west Thatcham needs to be carefully thought through. We do need more affordable housing in Newbury and I am pleased to see that up to 40% of the development would be earmarked for this however we must ensure that the whole area remains a fit place to live in - that's our priority."
