Liberal Democrats in West Berkshire are today expressing their dismay at the seemingly endless delays in recruiting wardens in Thatcham.
Thatcham Town Council has reserved a budget of £22,000 to part fund a Warden scheme aimed at improving community safety and well being. However, it seems unlikely that a Warden will hit the streets of Thatcham for some time because the Conservative-run council continue to drag their heels in beginning a recruitment programme. This means that the Warden scheme has missed the new Executive timetable (wherein Executive meetings now only take place every six weeks) and will only be heard later this week.
Terry Port, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Thatcham South, commented:
"These delays were avoidable and as such the Tories have cost Thatcham a summer of safety on the streets. This is particularly disappointing to me as they are due to approve the Warden scheme in the week following the schools breaking up for summer holidays.
Once all approvals have finally been given it will still take many weeks to advertise for, interview, recruit and train the new wardens. This is yet another display of incompetence paraded by this lacklustre administration. Once again the people of Thatcham have nothing to thank them for."
