Lib Dems are pushing for free car parking in Thatcham
Free car parking in Thatcham town centre was on the agenda at last week's Thatcham Area Forum (11th July). Councillor Alex Payton, who represents Thatcham Central ward, proposed the introduction of free car parking for the first two hours at the Kingsland Centre, next to Waitrose.
Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Payton emphasised that this measure should be brought in as soon as possible:
"This would bring trade to the town and encourage people to use the town centre shops, especially at a time when the Kingsland Centre owners are thinking of redeveloping the Centre and will be looking to attract new business into the Town."
Councillor Payton continued:
"We need to attract as much business into the town as possible. Trade is the oil that keeps a community going and by making it clear that you can shop in Thatcham without having to pay for parking this will revitalise the area and ensure its success as an important shopping centre.
He was supported in his motion by Councillor Jeff Brooks who leads the Liberal Democrat Group on West Berkshire Council, who added:
"We will push for this to be adopted by the Conservative administration - it is of vital importance to the success of Thatcham Town centre."
The proposals were seconded by Councillor Owen Jeffery (Thatcham South) and approved unanimously. Councillor Paul Pritchard (Thatcham Central), who chaired the meeting, commented afterwards:
"I've never seen such unanimous endorsement for a proposal"."
