A mounting bill costing thousands of pounds could hit local taxpayers after the Conservatives failed to listen to warnings from the Lib Dems. The Lib Dems pressured the Conservatives to reverse their decision to delay the Thatcham station environmental improvement at the Executive meeting on Thursday 9th June 2005.
The improvements planned for Thatcham station included a taxi rank, parking for disabled people and improved lighting and footpaths and are significant improvements to public safety and to minimising congestion at Thatcham Station.
Cllr Owen Jeffery (Thatcham South & Crookham) used a question at the Council's Executive to press the Conservatives to put the good of the users of Thatcham station first and reverse the delay originally announced by Cllr Chopping at Executive on 26th May.
Responding for the Executive Member for Highways who was away on holiday, Cllr Jones, Leader of the Council, refused to prevent the delay.
Cllr Denise Gaines, Lib Dem Shadow Executive Member for Finance, said "We know that these delays will mean increased costs. The Lib Dem administration ensured this project was fully funded by Section 106 developer contributions instead of the taxpayer. This delay will mean either some other schemes will be cut, or taxpayer will have to stump up."
