This week the Liberal Democrats running West Berkshire Council responded to the Council being short-listed for the Award for Most Improved Transport Local Authority.
Sally Hannon, West Berkshire Council Portfolio Holder for Transport, commented:
"This is an achievement of which everyone concerned can be proud. I would like to thank Council Officers for their hard work.
"Under Liberal Democrat control West Berkshire was the most improved Authority in 2004, and now we have been short-listed for another important national award."
West Berkshire Councils achievements have included:
• Receiving a score from the Department of Transport of 72% for the Annual Progress report 2004 which, in numerical terms made West Berkshire the most improved transport local authority in England over this period.
• Winning the National Award for the Most Improved Highway Authority in England for Cycling in 2004. West Berkshire improved their score by a massive 143% over the previous year, compared with a national average improvement of 16%.
• West Berkshire's Cycle Forum was singled out as an example of Best Practice for others to follow by the English Regions Cycling Development Team in 2004
• Winning an award at the Historic Bridge and Infastructure Awards 2003 in recognition of the "exceptional skill and care which was applied to (The Hungerford Canal Bridge's) design and execution.
• Launch of CLIVe (Community Learning and Information Vehicle) National Countryside Agency demonstration project 2004 to take learning to hard to reach communities.
