"Lib Dem's healthier meals in schools. Tories' red tape in schools."

March 8, 2005 9:31 PM

This week Liberal Democrat Cllr Mollie Lock, West Berkshire Executive Member for Children & Young People, announced a healthier future for school meals.

Cllr Lock said:

"We delighted to announce that we are pressing forward to healthier meals in schools and healthier alternatives to tackle the problem of Childhood Obesity, which this Council's Health Scrutiny Panel has been investigating recently."

"I know that local schools are working to secure a healthier future for our children, and take advantage of good quality, locally grown produce. Our school meals policy will ensure that any contractor adheres to our vision."

"Education provision in West Berkshire has been deemed as 'Excellent', and our schools receive top reports. I know they will make a success in this area without the heavy hand of bureaucracy tying them up in red tape with all sorts of arbitrary targets.

Cllr Lock added:

"An ex-Conservative Councillor, this week, has called for the introduction of all sorts of bureaucratic targets to be placed on schools. The Liberal Democrats want to trust them to get it right, the Conservatives want to tie them up in red tape.

"One also has to question why - if the ex-Councillor is so interested - he has not stood for Council since he lost his seat to the Liberal Democrats in 1995?"
